Open Research: Welcome

What is Open Research?

Open Research is research which seeks, at each stage of the research lifecycle, to be discoverable, accessible, reusable, transparent and sustainable. It means sharing research outputs and processes as early as possible in the research lifecycle in a way that enables access and reuse by others. The terms ‘Open Research’ and ‘Open Science’ can be used interchangeably. DMU, along with many UK institutions, chooses to use the term ‘Open Research’ as inclusive of all disciplines and research communities.

DMU's Open Research Position Statement summarises the University’s approach to Open Research.

Informed by external frameworks including the Concordat on Open Research Data and the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science, it sets out key principles for the conduct and support of Open Research at De Montfort University, and is supported by more detailed Policy Frameworks for Open Access and Research Data Management.

Good Open Research Practices

How Can You Engage In Good Open Research Practices?

  • Transparency: Clearly and openly document research methods, data sources, and results (where possible).
  • Replicability: Make research data, code, and materials publicly available to promote replicability and integrity of your research.
  • Collaboration: Encourage collaboration and teamwork among researchers in your field, as well as with stakeholders outside academia.
  • Responsible data management: Ensure the ethical and secure handling of research data throughout the lifecycle of your project.
  • Open communication: Promote open communication of research findings to wider audiences.  As well as producing Open Access scholarly publications, this includes communicating findings through social media, public engagement events, conferences and more.
