Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

While we are working towards making all our content as accessible as possible, we are aware that some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text (WCAG 1.4.12 (text spacing))
  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software. The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. Some of the Library web pages may contain such content.  Please contact us if you are unable to access this information. As older documents are replaced, they will be updated with accessible versions. Any new PDFs or documents we publish will meet accessibility standards (WCAG 4.1.2 (name, role value)
  • some live video streams do not have captions. Some externally produced videos or older videos may not have subtitles and some Panopto videos feature logos which do not have alternate text (WCAG 1.2.1 (audio-only and video-only pre-recorded), 1.2.2 (captions pre-recorded), 1.2.3 (audio description or media alternative pre-recorded) and 1.2.5 (audio description pre-recorded)
  • certain elements of our FAQs and Chat functions are part of the code structure provided by SpringShare and present non-accessible features, such as redundant or duplicate links (WCAG 2.4.4, “Link Purpose (In Context) and noscript elements
  • some of our forms do not have labels (WCAG 2.4.6 Headings and Labels)
  • The focus is missing for one tab between the 'No, thank you' button and the 'Librarian Login' on the LibChats page (WCAG 2.4.7 Focus Visible Link)
  • the colour contrast on some of the tag and subject lines is not accessible (WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum))
  • The infographic on our Good Academic Practices page is not accessible (WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content)
  • Some of our data tables lack headers (WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships)

We are working to correct all instances of non-compliance as part of a complete revamp of the site.

Third party systems, content and electronic resources

The Library website acts as a gateway to a number of third party systems or links to other resources that may also contain third-party content that we are not able to control or develop and therefore have no responsibility for. The Library’s online collections of e-journals, e-books and other resources are also provided by third party publishers and vendors and hosted on their platforms, we do not design or control these directly. The majority of systems and platforms offer a good level of accessibility and typically have a user accessibility statement with further information.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 1st August 2024.

We are manually testing all pages using WebAim WAVE, axe DevTools v4.84.3 and the Silktide Accessibility Checker Extension. Full site testing will be conducted in due course, with exploration into the use of other audit and evaluation tools.
