The CLA, UUK, GuildHE and several major publishers have produced guidelines in the creation of course packs. These provide guidelines on following good practice when creating course packs.
The Copyright Licensing Agency Higher Education Licence covers the making of digital copies of printed books, journals and magazines, and including them in "course-based collections", subject to strict conditions.
The following information provides the steps to follow if you would like to create electronic course packs. Course packs (otherwise known as study packs) are a collection of journal articles or book chapters for a specific course module. Information is also provided under Good Practice in the Creation of Course Packs and in the section Digitising Material from this page. Please note that under the current licence we can only scan from print based material owned by the University.
Log in to Talis Aspire DMU Resource List, then go to your list and choose the Edit list option. Against each entry you have the option to select “Request digitisation” select this if you wish to digitise a chapter or article. Your request will then be checked by Talis Aspire for:
Whether the publisher is mandated by the Copyright Licensing Agency
Whether it is within licence limits, therefore one chapter or 10 percent, or two whole articles from a single journal part.
Whether we hold the publication in our library holdings.
Talis Aspire will notify you either that the request is successful or referred within seconds of submitting the request.
If it is successful, then the request is processed by the Digitisation Team and the scanned material will be linked to your reading list entry.
If it is referred, then it will still go to the Digitisation Team, who will carry further checks and respond back to you.
