Research Data Management: Store/Organise Data

Organising data: what are the key points?

Organising your data effectively can help you identify, locate and use your research data files efficiently and effectively. Organising your files in a logical and consistent way will save time by helping you and others find the correct files, prevent errors and enable reproducibility.

The CESSDA Data Management Expert Guide advises on:

How to name and structure your files and folders

How to document your data

Storing data: what do I need to consider?

Storing your data securely and safely is important, in order to avoid loss, damage, theft or unlawful access. It is inadvisable to store research data on portable storage media or personal computers and laptops, for anything other than short term usage, due to their vulnerability to loss and damage.

The CESSDA Data Management Expert Guide advises on:

Considering storage options

Choosing file formats for storing data

DMU Figshare can be used for storing and in-project sharing of research data.  It provides GDPR compliant, secure cloud-based storage space, which is regularly backed up.  This is available to academic researchers and PhD students.
