What is an online tutorial?
A 30-minute tutorial that takes place synchronously via MS Teams.
How do I access the tutorial?
- Log in to your DMU MS Teams account at least 5 minutes before your appointment.
- Your tutor will call you in MS Teams at the scheduled time.
- Make sure you are in a quiet space and can use your computer’s microphone or a headset.
What if the tutor doesn’t call?
- Check your login
Make sure you’re signed in to MS Teams with your DMU student account. Some students are accidentally logged in with a work or personal account. If that’s the case, log out and sign back in using your DMU single sign-on credentials.
- Wait a few minutes
Occasionally, your tutor may be delayed due to another tutorial. Wait for 5 minutes. If they still haven’t arrived, contact the library team via JustAsk LibChat
What do I need to prepare?
Bring a sample of your work, even if it’s just a rough draft or plan. Your assignment brief is also important, as it helps the tutor understand the task and learning outcomes.
How do I share my work with the tutor?
You can:
- Attach files in the MS Teams chat window
- Share your screen during the session to walk through your draft or notes
What happens in a tutorial?
Tutorials are developmental and tailored to your needs. This might include:
- Getting feedback on a current draft
- Understanding comments you've received from lecturers
- Planning your approach to an assignment
Is what I discuss confidential?
Yes. Conversations about your work are confidential within the service—they are not shared with your lecturers.
However, all DMU staff have a duty of care. If you disclose information that raises concerns about your safety, we are required to report it to the university’s safeguarding team. If this happens, we will inform you.
Can I have more than one tutorial?
You can book one of each type of tutorial per week:
- Academic Writing
- Information Searching and Referencing
- Maths and Statistics
This ensures all students have fair access to the service.
What happens if I book more than one tutorial in a week?
If you book more than one of the same tutorial type in a week, only the first appointment will be kept. Any additional appointments will be cancelled, and you’ll be notified by email.
How can I cancel or amend my tutorial?
To cancel or reschedule, use the link provided in your booking confirmation email. Once cancelled, you may book a new tutorial at a different time.
