Tutorial Information: Face-to-Face Tutorials

Face-to-Face Tutorials

What is a face-to-face tutorial?

A 30-minute tutorial that takes place in person with a tutor.

Where does it take place?

In one of the individual meeting rooms in the Learning Development Zone (LDZ), located in the Kimberlin Library.

What happens when I arrive?

Take a seat in the LDZ waiting area. Your tutor will welcome you at the time of your tutorial.

What if the tutor isn’t there?

Occasionally your tutor may be delayed due to another tutorial or teaching commitment. Wait for 5 minutes. If they still haven’t arrived, please inform the library front desk staff.

What do I need to prepare?

Bring a sample of your work, even if it’s just a rough draft or plan. Your assignment brief is also important, as it helps the tutor understand the task and learning outcomes.

Is there tech in the room?

Yes. The room includes a PC that the tutor will be logged into. If you don’t have your own laptop or a printed copy, you can log on to the PC to access your files. The room also has access to Eduroam, DMU’s wireless network.

What happens in a tutorial?

Tutorials are developmental and tailored to your needs. This might include:

  • Getting feedback on a current draft
  • Understanding comments you've received from lecturers
  • Planning your approach to an assignment

Can I record the tutorial?

Some students find it helpful to audio record tutorials so they can revisit the discussion and take action on feedback. If you'd like to do this, please check with your tutor at the start of the session to see if they are happy to be recorded. It's also a good idea to take written notes during the tutorial in case you want to refer back quickly.

Is what I discuss confidential?

Yes. Conversations about your work are confidential within the service—they are not shared with your lecturers.

However, all DMU staff have a duty of care. If you disclose information that raises concerns about your safety, we are required to report it to the university’s safeguarding team. If this happens, we will inform you.

Can I have more than one tutorial?

You can book one of each type of tutorial per week:

  • Academic Writing
  • Information Searching and Referencing
  • Maths and Statistics

This ensures all students have fair access to the service.

What happens if I book more than one tutorial in a week?

If you book more than one of the same tutorial type in a week, only the first appointment will be kept. Any additional appointments will be cancelled, and you’ll be notified by email.

How can I cancel or amend my tutorial?

To cancel or reschedule, use the link provided in your booking confirmation email. Once cancelled, you may book a new tutorial at a different time.
