Changes to creating a MyEBSCO Account when using Library Search

by Mitchell Dunkley on 2024-06-04T14:43:00+01:00 | 0 Comments

We have made a change to how DMU students and staff create a Personal User Account (also known as a MyEBSCO account) when using our Library Search discovery tool. This is in response to a number of library users reporting an error message with the previous MyEBSCO account set up.

The default access for users visiting Library Search is Guest mode. This Guest access mode will not be changing. Guest access allows anyone (DMU and non-DMU) with an internet connection to search for content and view results in Library Search. Guest mode does not allow users to access subscribed online library resources via Library Search - users have to first verify their status as a current DMU student or member of staff by logging into Library Search with their DMU Single Sign On (SSO) username and password. One way to do this is through the Log in with your DMU Single Sign account to access online content banner link at the top of a Library Search results screen:

Once a user is verified as currently studying or working at DMU, they will be provided with access rights to subscribed online library content through Library Search (whether this be electronic journal articles, eBooks or online newspapers):

Library Search also provides additional "personalisation" features for users to utilise when viewing or accessing online content from the discovery portal. These features include permanently saving Library Search results/search terms/items found by the user, and permanently storing these records in different folders called Projects. These additional features can only be accessed when a user creates a Personal User Account (MyEBSCO account) with Library Search. Other online publisher platforms, such as Elsevier and ProQuest, also provide similar personalisation features for which a user will need to register a personal account with the provider.

When a DMU student or staff member logs into Library Search with their DMU Single Sign account for the first time, they are presented with a Do more with your research screen:

This screen prompts the user to make a decision about creating a MyEBSCO account (this account is needed to access the personalisation features available in Library Search). The user can click on the Continue personalised link to consent for a MyEBSCO account to be created, and for EBSCO to retain basic personal information once the MyEBSCO account is generated. If the user does not want a MyEBSCO account to be created at this point, and wishes to decline the request for EBSCO to retain their personal data, they can click on the Skip for now icon and progress to access the subscribed online content they have found through Library Search.

We initially configured Library Search to automatically sync a user's MyEBSCO account with their DMU Single Sign On credentials in the hope that this would reduce the number of clicks a user would have to make to log into Library Search, and enhance the user's overall experience of using our discovery system. We have received several reports from DMU students that this set up was causing problems and that they have been unable to access online content through after Library Search after they have declined creating a MyEBSCO account. A 151 error message displayed and did not allow the user to connect to online resources through Library Search without registering a MyEBSCO profile.

To fix this error, we have asked EBSCO to switch off the automatic syncing process involved with MyEBSCO and DMU Single Sign On accounts. DMU students and staff will now be able to access subscribed online library resources through Library Search without the need to create a MyEBSCO account.

A MyEBSCO account is required to access the personalisation features offered by Library Search in relation to saving and managing relevant results (e.g. adding a Library Search record to a folder within the Projects section of the results page). Students or staff without a MyEBSCO account, or users that are not signed into their MyEBSCO account, can only temporarily save records for the duration of their Library Search web session. Once their Library Search session ends, the records will be lost. If users want to permanently save results and items within the Library Search system, they will need to create a MyEBSCO personal account.
