Library Engagement Project: Design Principles

Library Design Principles
Become the central destination for inclusive, multidisciplinary, democratic, open access to new cutting-edge resources and tools not generally available elsewhere on campus. It is supported by experts who can guide in academic support and knowledge creation and unlock the value of resources to bring ideas to life. Supporting the development and sharing of new knowledge by showcasing student and research work in action and facilitating conversations that lead to new discoveries. It is also a leading-edge digital platform for knowledge creation, knowledge management and sharing by the university’s research community
A landmark building to inspire, reflecting the ambition of DMU at the heart of the campus. It is inclusive; a place where money, origin or status is irrelevant – it empowers and invigorates the entire community
Must meet environmental and well-building standards; 17 SDG goals embedded, carbon neutral, energy efficient, built on universal design principles. An environment featuring natural elements, such as greenery, natural materials and sunlight, to ensure higher levels of well-being, productivity, and creativity. Biophilic designed buildings incorporate things like natural lighting and ventilation, natural landscape features, and other elements for creating a more productive and healthier built environment for people
Aesthetically appealing to inspire and encourage interaction; when interaction occurs, people are more open to each other and therefore more open to new ideas
Support learning in all forms and formats
A destination that matters, which contains the DNA of a vital public space, a third space for all that functions as a meeting place, a forum, a place for cooperation, connection, and inspiration. It is a project centre -where everyone can bring their project to the library and come out with new insights. People’s activities and knowledge should become part of the collection. It is flexible, it takes shape through continuous use and individual choice. It is an experience that stimulates the senses. Tailored to meet the needs of its users, it also knows how to surprise. It hosts a creative programme of events and engaging resources and services. It supports learning from others and independently—from quiet study to active collaboration, including spaces to support workflows which enable internal collaboration and create connections between staff and students
Support student success through an innovative integrated library, student and faculty services; bringing together important central space and support, incorporating services and amenities that invite all users and potential users to enter. It connects the library to the adjoining campus buildings. A civic living room supporting active citizenship
