Official Statistics

Speech, Language and Communication Needs

Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) statistics are available as part of the Special Educational Needs (SEN) annual collection data.

You can filter that data to access specific information, such as number of children with SLCN within England in schools (not independent schools):

total by gender by age  by school level/type by ethnicity by SEN provision

The above data is taken from the Explore Education Statistics portal (provided by the DfE/ONS) and you can also combine those options to filter further (ie. number of girls with SLCN in primary schools within England), by selecting a data set and filtering it.

The above is at national level, but you can filter regionally or by local authority as well, ie.:

Total number of children with SLCN within East Midlands Total number of children with SLCN within Leicester

You can also use the options to filter the statistics further (ie. number of girls with SLCN in primary schools within Leicester).

Early Years

Early Years statistics are available through the Explore Education Statistics portal, the Fingertips portal (DHSC) and the ONS website:

Number of children at expected level in Communication & Language and Literacy areas of learning: England

The above can be filtered by ethnicity, SEN provision, free school meal eligibility, gender and geography.

Child development: percentage of children achieving the expected level in communication skills at 2 to 2 and a half years: England

The above can be filtered geographically.

Communication and language skills by end of Early years foundation stage: England

The above data is shown through maps, charts and tables.
