Stephen Lawrence Day 2020

by Katharine Short on 2020-04-22T15:53:00+01:00 in Archives, Special Collections | 0 Comments

National Stephen Lawrence Day on 22 April, celebrates the life and legacy of Stephen Lawrence, who was killed in a racist attack at just 18 years old.The day is coordinated by the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, which was founded by Stephen’s mother, Baroness Lawrence. The Trust works to inspire and support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and to create a fairer society.

In 2019, the Special Collections team worked with colleagues from across the university to put on a day for local schools. Pupils were able to tour the university and chat to students, participate in art sessions and learn more about Stephen's life through the archive collection deposited at DMU by Baroness Lawrence.

Naturally we are sad that we will not be sharing this day with schools this year. It is so rewarding to see young people engaging with history and growing to understand archival concepts. We thought it would be helpful to share part of our presentation, with an exercise at the end about your own archives. Please feel free to use this for home schooling! (Now available as a PowerPoint at the bottom right of this page)
