As April begins it is traditional to celebrate April Fools. So, keeping in the spirit of things we found some fantastic pictures of students joking around during the now infamous RAG at the Leicester College of Art and Tech and of students protesting higher fees with an excellent prank during the 70's.
RAG was an annual money raising event for charity. During the event students created magazines, played pranks and generally got up to mischief all in the name of raising money. However, the event was banned once the institution deemed that it was getting too out of hand. So now we only have pictures of these events!
Thanks to Susan and Peter Hollins we have some fantastic pictures of some of the mischief students would get up to during the 60's! Donated as part of our 150th anniversary, this picture is just part of the collection of photos donated which give a fantastic insight into life as a student at this time.

First up is this action shot of a piano smashing in the town centre. Donators Peter and Susan Hollins recalled that during the 60's this was a relatively common occurrence and piano smashing was pretty normal. Definitely not an April Fools day prank you could do now without making some enemies!
Next we have a pretty creative prank from students in 1975. In order to protest rising rent costs students decided to start paying up on all kinds of weird objects including eggs, lamps and a paving slab (Right at the front of the picture)
If you would like to know more about these topics and the relating materials we have or even if you want to donate to our collections as part of our archive appeal please contact us at archives@dmu.ac.uk or via our social media.
Happy April Fools day everyone we hope your pranks go down well!
