Introducing a new series on our blog, The Weird and Wonderful of DMU Special Collections! For each installment of weird and wonderful we will choose an item or collection that we think is especially deserving of a blog post!
Part 1 of this series is the Russian Space Collection. Donated to us by one of our Lecturers in Politics, Andrew Thomas, this collection is a favourite of nearly everyone on the team. Andrew collected many items of space ephemera during his Masters on Russian Space travel and on completion donated the pieces to us and we’re very keen to show them off whenever an opportunity arises.
First up are these wonderful diascopes. With a lens on the bottom you can peer into each rocket and be greeted with a lovely portrait of 6 famous Russian astronauts.
Second is this collection of Space themed stamps. With a wide array of colours and designs these stamps are always a big hit when we use them for teaching or displays. The drawings and space themes give them a distinct almost sci-fi look!
Lastly in our showcase of this collection is this series of rare drawings by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in which he envisaged the exit (doorway) of a spacecraft into the vacuum of space as well as a drawing of a Reactive engine (Rocket engine); one of the first designs of its kind from c.1930.
