Using Generative Artificial Intelligence: Using AI ethically

There are many ethical implications of generative AI which are a consequence of both the AI itself and its use. In a university setting, AI tools should be used with academic integrity and within the expectations set by the university.

Before and when using generative AI tools when working on an assignment, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Has the use of generative AI been permitted by my tutors for this assignment?
  • Am I using it within the boundaries agreed in class and the assessment guidance?
  • Is using generative AI tools hindering my ability to learn essential skills?
  • Have I evaluated and fact checked the output from the tools I have used?
  • Have I considered the potential biases of the chatbot's output?
  • Have I made sure that the final product is my own work and analysis? Using the output produced by generative tools as if it was my own would be in direct contravention of DMU Academic Integrity and Misconduct Policy
  • Have I acknowledged the use of generative AI as required in the assessment guidance?
  • Have I referenced the tools, prompts and outputs I have used according to the assessment guidance and/or  Cite them right?
