What is the Maths and Statistics Online Drop-in Session?

Our online drop-in gives you the opportunity to speak with a Maths Learning Centre (MLC) tutor about your maths or statistics queries and get individual help from a qualified lecturer. Online drop-in operates on a first-come-first-served basis – so no booking needed. To allow tutors to see as many students as possible drop-in slots are kept to 15 minutes.

How does it work?

  1. Join the waitlist with your DMU email address (P-number @my365.dmu.ac.uk)
  2. You will receive an email letting you know when you are next inline
  3. If you do not receive an email, contact us via JustAsk LibChat and let them know you did not receive the Drop-in email.
  4. Open Teams on your device. Login to MS365 on Office.com and click on the Teams app or open the Teams Desktop App if installed
  5. An MLC tutor will then contact you on Teams
  6. You will be able to chat via text, audio and/or screen share

What drop-in CAN cover:

  • Design a questionnaire
  • Consider the purpose of statistics
  • Use statistical software packages e.g. Excel, SPSS, Minitab
  • Explore data and carry out descriptive statistics
  • Choose the right statistical test and analyse data
  • Interpret data and understand what your results mean
  • Be prepared to make the decisions and value judgement for your own work

What drop-in CAN'T cover:

  • Do the data analysis for you
  • Advise on the subject of the research project
  • Provide technical software support or advice
  • Proofread or answer questions that form part of an assessed assignment

Make sure you can access Teams from your device and have it open ready to receive the call from the MLC tutor. Identify what it is you want to talk about with the tutor and have any course material and/or attempted question ready to share. These need to be in electronic form so you may need to scan your work, or take a picture and upload it ready for your turn.

Online Drop-in operates on a first-come-first-served basis and tutors see as many students as they can within the hour.

If the queue is full for the day, you have a number of options:

Library Learning Services and WaitWhile use your contact information to send you the link to alert you to your place in the queue and to send the link to the online drop-in.
